- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 slices of Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Optional: 1/4 cup beef broth
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter and olive oil. Stir in the sliced onions, sugar, and balsamic vinegar. Cook for about 20 minutes until the onions are caramelized.
- Add garlic and thyme to the caramelized onions. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. If the mixture becomes too dry, add a splash of beef broth. Set aside.
- Form the ground beef into 4 patties and season with salt and pepper.
- Cook the patties on a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare.
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
- Assemble the burgers: Place the cooked patties on the bottom halves of the toasted buns, top with caramelized onions, and close with the top bun. Serve hot.
