Description

Sausage & Herb Stuffing is a timeless holiday side dish that combines seasoned bread cubes, aromatic herbs, and flavorful sausage. Perfect for festive occasions like Thanksgiving, this versatile stuffing can be baked to achieve a crispy top or prepared in a slow cooker to save oven space. The dish is beloved for its rich flavors and comforting textures, making it a standout addition to any holiday meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 package (10-14 oz) seasoned bread stuffing mix
  • 4 cups chicken stock
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 celery ribs, chopped
  • 1 pound pork sausage (e.g., Jimmy Dean Original)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the onion, celery, butter, chicken stock, black pepper, and poultry seasoning. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about 20 minutes until the vegetables soften.
  3. In a large skillet, brown the sausage, breaking it into small pieces. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  4. Place the seasoned bread stuffing mix in a large bowl. Add the cooked sausage and stir to combine.
  5. Gradually pour the chicken stock mixture into the bread and sausage mixture, stirring gently after each addition until the bread cubes are moist but not soggy. Add a little milk if needed to adjust consistency.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a buttered 3-quart casserole dish. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour, or until the stuffing is hot and lightly browned on top.
  7. Remove from the oven, let rest for a few minutes, and serve warm.
